Your Dental Checkup
The first portion of your appointment consists of a checkup with our dentist, Dr. Uzma Ansari. Our goal is to examine every possible area of your mouth so that no oral health problem goes unchecked. That’s why we utilize the latest dental technology to examine your mouth for potential problems like cavities, gum disease, and even oral cancer.
We’ll also ask you about your oral and medical history to get an idea of what kind of treatment would best work with your mouth and body. After your mouth has been thoroughly examine, you and Dr. Ansari will work together to devise a customized treatment plan if need be.
Your Dental Cleaning
After discussing any issues that arise with you and formulating a treatment plan, Dr. Ansari will have you off to one of our skilled dental hygienists. They will begin by using special instruments to painlessly remove built-up plaque and tartar from your teeth and along your gumline. Then they will use a special polishing paste to remove stains from the surfaces of your teeth and make them shine a little brighter. Lastly, we’ll floss to remove any debris that may be lingering between your teeth.
Why These Visits Are So Important
If you brush and floss your teeth at home every day, you might be wondering why you even need to come in for a checkup and cleaning every six months. The answer is that while you can disrupt plaque by yourself with proper oral hygiene, you can’t remove it at home once it hardens into tartar. At that point, only a licensed dental professional can get rid of it. That’s where your dental hygienist comes in.
Regular appointments with us can greatly reduce your risk of oral health problems like cavities and gum disease, which are often caused by large deposits of plaque and tartar. Gum disease in particular raises your risk of multiple other health problems. It has been linked to issues like heart disease, diabetes, liver cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
Finally, many oral health problems don’t present problems until irreversible damage has been done. For example, a small cavity that you can’t even notice can be detected early enough at your checkup that all it needs is a small filling. If, however, you wait until the cavity starts hurting, you might need root canal therapy or even a tooth extraction in order to preserve your oral health.
