Your smile is one of the most noticeable aspects of your appearance. It’s often one of the first things people notice about you. If you’re not confident about your smile, you may try to hide your mouth or smile without showing your teeth.
If you’re less than confident about your smile, it’s easier to fix than you might realize. Are your teeth discolored or less white than you wish? Professional teeth whitening is a simple and relatively inexpensive way to fix it. Our dentists at Lowes Island Dentistry have options to help you look your best.
Why professional teeth whitening is better than OTC products
The over-the-counter teeth whitening kits at your drugstore may look tempting when you want whiter teeth. After all, they’re very inexpensive and allow you to do everything yourself. But as with most other things, you get what you pay for.
The best reason to get your teeth whitened at our office is that you get more consistent and powerful results. Both at-home and professional teeth whitening use peroxide treatments to whiten your teeth. But the at-home kits use a much lower concentration of peroxide, meaning that the results are less dramatic.
What results can you expect from professional teeth whitening?
Professional teeth whitening produces much more dramatic results than you would receive at home. At-home kits can take several weeks to gradually whiten your teeth, but you can get remarkable results in our office in as little as one session.
Depending on what method you choose, heat, light, and the strength of the peroxide can quickly whiten your teeth by several shades.
The most dramatic results occur in a couple of sessions. But in many cases, we can whiten your teeth by three to eight shades in as little as a single two-hour session.
What types of teeth whitening are available?
One of the methods we use at Lowes Island Dentistry is Zoom teeth whitening. In this procedure, we first use a gel to protect your lips and gums from the bleach. We then apply the bleaching agent to your teeth and shine a powerful light on them to more effectively break up stains.
The gel stays on your teeth for 15 minutes, and the treatment requires three sessions. Zoom teeth whitening produces dramatic results in a little less than an hour. By the end of the three sessions, you should have a smile you feel great showing off.
We also offer a professional-quality at-home whitening system called KöR. Although less powerful than our Zoom whitening system, we believe that this system is superior to other at-home products that are currently on the market. The trays provide enough gel to whiten teeth over six to 10 hours, compared to 25-35 minutes for most products.
Maintaining your results
Once you’ve whitened your teeth, you’ll want to maintain the dazzling results. Your teeth may be a bit sensitive, so ask us about special toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Use caution with extremely cold beverages while your teeth are sensitive. Avoid consuming things that stain your teeth, including coffee, cola, red wine, and tea, and don’t use tobacco products.
