February is National Children’s Dental Month!

In case you didn’t know, February is Nation Children’s Dental Month, and it presents parents with the perfect opportunity to get kids more involved in oral hygiene. This year’s focus is on choosing tap water to drink because of the benefits of fluoride when it comes to protecting your teeth from cavities and decay. And while we know it isn’t always easy to get your kids excited about brushing their teeth and going to the dentist, here are a few tips that you can use this month to help them develop healthy habits that will give them a confident and lasting smile into adulthood.

Get the whole family involved

Don’t just tell your children to practice oral hygiene, show them this month by performing each act with them from flossing to brushing to drinking tap water. If anyone in your family is due for a six-month check-up, go ahead and schedule the appointment and let your child add it to the calendar so they can see the proactive steps you take for your pearly whites. Schedule two set times a day that are non-negotiable for everyone (even the adults) in the household to grab their brushes and start fighting plaque and tartar buildup.

Make it fun!

Make the process of dental care fun by letting your kids pick out their own toothbrush with their favorite cartoon character on it. You can also choose a song or cool timer that they brush their teeth to, and have a sticker chart hanging in the bathroom that your child gets to fill out after each successful daily brushing and flossing. You can give your kids fun rewards when they have filled their monthly sticker chart, and make sure after their routine cleanings at the dentist that you schedule a little time afterward for a movie or a visit to the playground.

Let your kids teach you for a change

It’s great to show your kids how to brush and floss effectively, but sometimes you’ll find it’s even more productive when they show you how to perform each task. Get a few of their favorite stuffed animals to sit in the audience and then let them show you step-by-step the best methods for keeping cavities away. Not only will you get a better idea of what they understand and what they may not, but you may even learn a little something that they picked up from listening to the dentist at Lowes Island Dentistry! Schedule an appointment today!
