Until recently crowning a tooth could take up to three visits, while sometimes using a temporary crown to fully restore a tooth. At Lowes Island Dentistry, our talented team is proud to offer the latest in dental technology by using CEREC to make your permanent crown in a single appointment! Yes, you can be in and out of Dr Ansari’s chair in a single visit and you will leave with a permanent, all ceramic crown! All ceramic or all-porcelain crowns provide the best natural color match than any other type of crown and you will notice the “life-like” appearance that mimics natural teeth. These all-ceramic permanent crowns do not produce the black gum line so commonly seen with porcelain-metal crowns. The use of this CAD/CAM precision 3-D technology, better known as CEREC was started in the mid 1980’s and has seen many advances that have allowed for conservative tooth preparation so that the restoration can be luted or bonded to healthy enamel.
CEREC stands for CHAIR SIDE ECONOMICAL RESTORATION OF ESTHETIC CERAMICS and is engineered by a German Company called Sirona. Sirona is the global leader in the development of digital treatment modalities that drive improved workflow and a better patient experience. CEREC allows us to create a customized crown, inlay, onlay or veneer that fits your tooth perfectly within a matter of 15 minutes and is completely biocompatible with your own teeth structure. For you, our guest, this means fewer injections, less drilling and you will not be taking as much time out of your hectic schedule for dental care. No Loose Temporaries. No Messy Impressions. JUST ONE EASY APPOINTMENT!
A CEREC tooth restoration is not just convenient, it is also healthy. Many years ago, dentists had few options to repair decayed and damaged teeth other than amalgam, gold, and other metals. CEREC uses strong, tooth colored ceramic materials to restore your teeth to their natural strength, beauty, and function. These materials closely match the composition of natural tooth structure. This means when you eat hot food and then drink something cold, the restoration and tooth expand and contract at almost equal rates. Also, these materials are chemically bonded to your tooth, so Dr Ansari can save as much healthy tooth structure as possible while providing you with a dental restoration that strengthens your tooth.
The procedure for the placement of a CEREC crown is very simple. The first step is to remove the decay from the tooth once you are comfortably numb. The tooth is then prepared for the crown and a digital camera is used to take digital images of the prepared tooth. These images are captured on a computer screen in 3D. The doctor can then design the restoration right in front of you. Once the design is finished, the CEREC will mill the restoration in less then 15 minutes. Our patients can enjoy a refreshment during this time or catch up with TV or work And if you would like to watch the milling process, you can do that too. Once the restoration is milled, the doctor tries in the restoration and checks it for accuracy; fit and bite before the crown is stained and crystallized. This process may take another 10-15 minutes. Dr Ansari and her team will finish the process by bonding the crown. The total appointment time is less then 2 hours. When you look in the mirror, you will see your old smile back Crowns are durable and will usually last about 15-20 years. You should care for it as you would any other teeth with regular brushing and flossing.
